The theme: words that make you a smartass. Or, in my case, a particularly smart smartass.
There's nothing quite as much fun as insulting someone who doesn't entirely realize they've been insulted, but others know. Shakespeare was the master of this sort of language – I suspect that he probably wasn't very good at comebacks in actual conversation, but on the stage he was a cutting master.
Whereas I am good and quick with the comebacks. Don't believe me? Try the chat room tomorrow night and wear your asbestos underwear.
Anyway. Back to our word for the day.
Q is for Quotha.
Two definitions:
(archaic) — used especially to express surprise or contempt
and:
Indeed. [From quoth a, an alteration of quoth he (said he).] The word is used to express surprise or sarcasm, after quoting someone.
The kids today on the internet use the slang QFT, meaning Quoted for Truth, both for an agreement but also for a sarcastic add-on. Telling the difference is a challenge for many, and Quotha works for the latter.
So there's your free lesson in being a smart smartass. Tune in tomorrow where I'll switch back to being education.
