(frontrunner that wasn't picked: Goodonyah, on account of it not being a word)
G. I don't think I use G-words all that often, excepting GOOD and GREAT. I'm quick to praise, y'see. When something is worthy, I'm not shy about saying so. I'm not quite as quick to damn, though. I'm hard-hearted, but, I'm still polite.
But there's one G-word that really gives the highest praise. It's about attaining a certain status of praise that not many things really reach.
G is for GOLDEN.
1 : consisting of, relating to, or containing gold
2 a : being or having the color gold or the color of gold b : BLOND 1
3 : LUSTROUS, SHINING
4 : of a high degree of excellence : SUPERB
5 : PROSPEROUS, FLOURISHING <golden days>
6 a : radiantly youthful and vigorous b : having talents that promise great success — often used with boy c : highly favored : POPULAR
7 : FAVORABLE, ADVANTAGEOUS <a golden opportunity>
8 : of, relating to, or being a 50th anniversary or its celebration
9 : MELLOW, RESONANT <a smooth golden tenor>
What did I say about the good words having a lot of definitions? Golden is no exception.
In this context, though, I care nothing about the precious metal itself and entirely about the status commanded by the word. When things are Golden, you know they're good. Gold-standard is all about top-of-the-line. A high degree of excellence. Yeah, that hits it home nicely.
So things can be Good, or they can be Great, but when they are GOLDEN… now we're talking.
